Unbound Slave

Bronze Monument, 2017

Organization of American States
Washington, D.C.

The enraptured, ecstatic “leaping forth” of the figure in Unbound Slave is a symbolic sculptural representation of the freed prisoner of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave leaping towards comprehension of their newfound reality. The implied movement of this liberated form is analogous to the freedom inherent to learning and the discovery of knowledge and expression of knowledge through art. The figure is leaping beyond the recurring sculptural motif of broken chains that blend within and through the elemental forms that emerge from the monument’s base.
