Gates of the Hudson Arch

Bronze Monument, 2011

Hook Mountain State Park
Upper Nyack, NY

Gates of the Hudson Arch combines botanical and architectural elements to honor the accomplishments of the 19th-C. American master artists of the Hudson River School of Painting. This composition has permanent placements on both sides of the Hudson River: at Hook Mountain State Park in Nyack, NY and at MacEachron Park in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. Thomas Cole, founder and leading master of the Hudson River School of Painting, wrote of this location that, “If he who has travelled and observed the skies of other climes will spend a few months on the banks of the Hudson, he must be constrained to acknowledge that for variety and magnificence American skies are unsurpassed.” These monuments include the text, cast in raised bronze lettering, of the 2010 United States Senate Resolution 278, “Honoring the Hudson River School painters for their contributions to the United States.”
